The city was named after the Hohokam Indian Ruins and was founded during the mining boom in 1879. Much of the growth of the town was because of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1915. Both Northern Arizona University and Central Arizona College have campuses in the city.
This community is one of both modern amenities and historic charm. Golfers will enjoy the Dave White Municipal Golf Course, which has 18-holes. There are many activities available for senior citizens at the Dorothy Powell Senior Center. Historic Downtown has many locally owned businesses and hosts community events. Just outside of this unique community is an abandoned place called The Domes. In 1982 buildings were designed in a dome shape as a way to keep costs low and for protection from temperature changes. When they were completed an electronic manufacturer was supposed to move in. It only took six weeks to build the structure, which is concrete poured over a steel skeleton and inflated balloons. However, the company closed down and never moved in, leaving the buildings abandoned. The buildings are still vacant and draw many visitors because they are UFO shaped, which have led to all kinds of stories of hauntings.
The real estate in this diverse community follows the traditional Santa Fe style. You have single-family homes that range from three bedrooms to six bedrooms. There are older homes as well as new developments and contemporary townhomes. There are many schools available in the area, public as well as private. The area has a low crime rate and the communities seem to be tight-knit. The size of the community increases by almost 50% during the winter months, as people take advantage of the great weather.
